WAXOYL OR KURUST???

Hi,

Could someone point out the differences between waxoyl and kurust. Both claim to kill rust etc, and am a bit confused. The internet has so many conflicting points of view. So do I use both or just one?

Thanks

This goes on and on with you.........really - you need to KILL the rust as best you can with Kurust/Jenolite etc - and then protect with waxoyl...... You've been told this over and over again. I am certainly not going to comment on this theme again. But don't expect either product to magically eliminate rust. If a panel has rusted through from the inside to the outside - it needs new steel - not magic potions.......

I wanted other opinions, and the only person that EVER comments on this forum and my questions, appears to be yourself.

I feel as though you must sit, logged on to this site 24/7.

I want other opinions of other people, and your answer aint gospel. It IS confusing, as both claim to kill rust. This wasn't a question on any particular panel, just a question of the differences between waxoyl and kurust.

As I said, I have read different opinions on the internet, and if you are tired of commenting on the same subject, then its simple, don't.

However, I am entitled to ask as mny questions as I like, and if I dont feel as though my question has been answered, which in this case it hasn't, I will ask it again. Previous questions were how to treat a rusty panel, this is a question purely on the differences between waxoy and kurust, because they both claim to do the same job.

BMC's not known for mincing his words so don't take it personally. He is right though Waxoyl won't stop rust. Kurust etc... will at best stall it's progress for a while but follow the instructions as it can be nasty stuff if you get it on your skin/eyes etc..

Kurust, when applied to rust, converts the iron oxide into an inert black coloured compound which can then be painted.
Waxoyl is a preventative treatment which is applied by brush, spray,or injection to a sound surface and forms a waxy skin which repels water and so inhibits the formation of rust. :D

Thanks for that. Just wondering why does the hammerite website claim waxoyl kills rust? Maybe becuase it excludes oxygen and water? I also read waxoyl has rust inhibitors in it, like kurust?

Thanks

And neither kill rust! The chemical ingredient forms an inert skin over the rust(try it and then scratch it off a few days/weeks/months later)the rust you left will still be there but the top surface will have gone black from the conversion.Likewise if you just put waxoyl over the rust the rust will still be there but covered in waxoyl. While we're on the subject waxoyl is by no means the best wax based coating either! This is why its pointless just using it without removing as much as possible by any means available.Once you've done that and used the convertors you will need to paint before using the wax based ingredient. The convertor will have turned the miniscule remnants of rust that you couldnt get off to an inert oxide that will need to be painted to preserve it.The wax product will go over the paint to preserve that.

Interesting that. I suppose something like waxoyl though prevent oxygen and moisture, therefore if not converting rust, it must prevent it from spreading?

Hi,

Here is an explanation on what rust is and how to prevent it, http://www.rust.co.uk/a-guide-to-rust.cfm

The problem I feel with the question you are asking is that opinions vary on what product to use, some people prefer one product some another. You yourself may prefer a particular brand.
With any car that is old,has been neglected or is in the need of restoration the only way to go is to keep on top of maintance of the bodywork, remember the 6 P`s (Proper Preperation Prevents *iss Poor Performance)

For the record my opinioin is that you get what you pay for. I personally use the Dinatrol range of products for keeping rust at bay.

Very helpful, thankyou. So I dont need to use kurust and waxoyl, just one or the other.

Perhaps I read his response, or all the others differently to you.. but I thought they all stated they served different purposes.. So use both..

Hi,

You need to prepare the surface you are trying to protect, this may mean sanding back to good clean shiny metal and then applying rust killing product, you may have to remove old rusty metal back to solid metal and weld in a replacement panel. Then prime and paint the area, finally treat the area with your preffered rust preventitve product. It really is as straight forward as that.

Don't worry 'king' -I won't be answering any of your questions in future ! All this fuss about rust treatments - just amazing.

Kurust and Waxoyl are two completely different things..... the first neutralizes rust, and I have used it to good effect in the past before making a more permanent repair.

Waxoyl is sprayed in box sections, sills, under wheelarches etc generally on good metal to PREVENT any rust from occuring. Most owners waxoyl their cars once or twice a year. Make sure all drain holes are clear.

That's nice isn't it? I've given you several replies in the past along with a few others which you seem not to be happy with. I've suggested how to eliminate rust as much as possible and I can't see what other suggestions you are waiting for. I repeat. Remove it, kill what's left, paint it, then a film of Waxoyl -----or cut out panel and replace. Then move on!

Thats nice, putting apostrophes around my title. Ahh, its nice the subjects take note of my title, I am 'happy' when you do that :D

Is it usual for someone to put 'apostrophes' around someones name 'bmcecosse'?

I wasn't enquiring about rust, merely the differences between two products. That is all.

Les, I have read your answers, and thank you for giving me rust tips.

However like I said, this question was merely a question on the differences between two products.

Neither you, 'bmcecosse' or 'les' have to respond to my questions, no one is making you, and if you have nothing nice and constructive to write, then please dont bother.

I feel that bmc has in fact given a very practical response, an answer to what is the most likely situation/case in which you would use either of these products!

You're right people don't have to reply to your posts but generally on this site we like to respond to each other and do it in varying styles. Although I'm quite happy :D ---to ignore you if you would prefer. You put apostrophes around my title!
