my little truck over heats when thermostat is in and runs cool when removed ,rad is new, stat is new , could it be the wrong one?

have you checked your stat is working by placing in a pot of very hot water? to see if it opens?

How do you know it 'overheats'?? Does it boil over? Thermostat should be no higher than 88 degrees - perhaps better with 74 in summer.

Tried stat in water and it opens didn't have a thermometer to check at what temperature but it was boiling a few seconds later .
And the reason why i think it's over heating is that the temperature guage halfway between N and H + the air coming out the heater is hot enough to slow roast a leg of pork (mmmm pork) .
tried a new sender and the stat is new , the rad is a new re-cored jobby

So it's all working exactly as it should and the stat must be a high temp setting. It will be stamped on somewhere. If it bothers you -get a 74 stat for summer.

hi also check your heater valve is working,the upside is you will be snug as a bug in the winter months

Turn the heater off.
When up to temp, If the radiator cap opens and blows steam/hot water continually down the rubber drain pipe you are (as I was) overheating.
If you lose a little water and the rad cap closes again then for me everything is ok, but running hot in warm weather.
Carry plenty of water in the boot.
Listen for a discernable groaning as the rad cap opens and passes steam, otherwise you are ok.

so i should just bypass the heater as i dont have a heater valve . stick a bit of tape over the temp guage, to avoid distraction ,drive around listening for groaning noises ,whatching for steam with a couple of botles of water in the back, I'll try it and let you know

No - that has not been the advice - but do as you wish - it's your car......

you may be worring unduly,so long as the engine is not boiling and blowing water out of the rad cap,its not is it?,then the high reading could be just the winter stat fitted,or the gauge is reading high,Run it up to temp and then leave it ticking over on the drive for a few minutes,if its overheating you will soon find out because it will start to blow water out of the rad.If it dosen't then suggest all will be ok.

Ok I don't have a metal fan blade continuosly spinning attatched to the water pump , but i do have an electric fan, ticking over with the fan on it sits bang on N (normal) take it for a drive and the temp starts creeping up turn on the blower in the cab and it drops considerably , tho I'm cooking as it's very confined , deffo gonna try and get a lower thermostat and I'm thinking of fitting an original fan blade possibly even two in a cross X, has anybody else tried this, and has anyone got one spare

A single fan blade will solve your problem......

And new ones are readily available from all the usual suppliers. Old ones could have stress fracture that you will find out about only when the blade spins off - although they might also be absolutely fine.

actualy your right my birds one snapped , scared the MY FAVOURITE CAR IS A DATSUN CHERRY out of her ,and fortunatly didn't do any visible damage

oh that did make my day.
If you want to yes, the heater supplies a little additional cooling so if its off and the engine does not overheat then all is hunky dory is my point.
A lot of people dont know they are out of water until its too late, the groan combined with hissing steam is a forewarning to pull over before a head gasket pops or worse, not always heard by those with domestic appliances (stereos) fitted.
The additional water in the boot is common sense if we want to limp home without the additional cost of a tow truck, thanks for cheering me up though

Tried to get a 74% themostat from ESM and they seemed to think i was mad, thats to cold they said 82 is as low as we go, any ideas ,i just want to turn my heater off

I fail to see what's stopping you turning it off.

You could always get an infra-red thermometer like this;

and see if there is actually any overheating going on.
