Hi there i have a 1970 Morris traveller 1098cc neg earth alternator conversion with servo...Just thought i should mention those details in case....

THE PROBLEM occured one day as i was driving a long after filling up about 30ish miles before hand.... I put my foot down a bit and the was a bit juddery and had little bursts of working properly then seemingly giving up...

I have changed the points gap, checked and cleaned plugs *WHICH WERE FAWN IN COLOUR*. I had seen a post about plinking ear;ier and i think i'm suffering with it.... i have turned the advance/retard dial to full retard and then back a few turns towards advance but nothing..... so i loosened the distributor brackets and proceeded to turn that anti clockwise to no avalie?

I'm not sure if it is the fuel from the esso or my timing or what now, can anyone help me please?

use the bmc guide, set a fast tick over using the screw on the throttle stop on the carb then turn the dizzy untill the engine revs pick up ,if you go too farand it slows down thats pinking ,then go back a little you can do it by ear you cant go far wrong .a tip put a mark on the dizzy so you have a datum point .

it's called pinking 'cause it sounds like a pink pink pink noise,especially noticeable when accelerating heavily in top at the bottom end of top gear rev range.

Running well and then not so well isn't pinking,although that may be present as well,your problems sounds more like a fuel issue?
'cause ....

1) first time after a fill up
2) runs well then not
3) timing faults tend not to put themselves right tho points problems affect timing

so if you get the timing right and that doesn't cure your problem,take a look at at your fuel system

You either got rubbish fuel - or you put diesel in by mistake ??

I will check the fuel system etc and double check i haven't put diesel in BMC now you have worried me rather a lot!! SURELY i can't have put diesel in....

Don't panic - it won't do any great harm if you have - in fact - gives the engine a good clean out! How much petrol was in the tank - and how much did you add at the 'fill up' ?

Hi guys just to update i have replaced my carb and discovered that it was the condenser that had failed....considering it was a new one from Bull m i'm not very impressed!

Well done - so nothing to do with 'filling up' at all!

a case of 2+2 =5 at least its fixed,I had three go on me in a very short time so i went electric.

haha yes BMC electronic ignition seems like a very good idea!!!

A condenser is an electronic component, and all ignition systems are electric. Except diesels, of course....... I stick with points - it's fixable.....

I was thinking buy some new-old stock points and old ignition parts to have as spares but change to elec ignition?

ive been electric for 7 years not let me down yet .
