rear axle

Hi folks
Just removed rear nearside brake prior to replacement with new, and to replace the differential. I discovered quite a bit of oil on the spring mounts where the axle case meets it. I am assuming it's the axle casing leaking rather than an oil seal at fault? Inside the brake drum the shoes and backplate are bone dry.
What does the team think?

PS I know there's no bump stop - that's going to be fitted too![frame]Image[/frame]

Looks like the perches and the axle are rusted - and oil is seeping out. But you say fitting a new axle anyway?

I wasn't going to replace the axle casing - but looks as if I may have to! Was just going to replace the diff and all oil seals to the rear half shafts

should I degrease the springs before using the car again, as the handling will probably be different between that and the unlubricated one the other side

Update - just drained the axle and done the "smell test" - not the same oil at all. It must be from the damper, as I replaced that oil last year just prior to garaging the car for the winter. The oil drips are also very clean - whereas the axle oil is quite blackened.

The damper normally leaks where the arm goes into the body, then runs down the arm. Check the level in the damper.

so, I dismantled the axle / rear spring joint..... what a whiff of diff oil! I suppose the pong dissipates after some time hence my being fooled earlier....
Definitely a knackered rear axle, the seat that sits on the spring locating boss is completely shot too, hardly anything left of it... which explains my problem last year with "torque steering" on a rear wheel drive car!
Anyone in the Blackpool area with a decent axle for sale?
