Changing Plug Leads

I had a look at my plug leads today - I have some new old stock ones I want to fit as mine are looking messy. I'm just wondering what I do with the ends of the new leads though.
At the moment the ends are simply cut, but my dizzy cap requires you to push the lead in and then tighten a screw with a point on the end to secure the lead.
Do I strip the lead so that only the copper is showing then screw the pointed screw right through it? Or does the pointed screw simply "pierce" the whole lead to hol it in place?
Hope I have explained that well enough!
