sump gaskets

I am going to change my sump gaskets as i believe the leak i have is from there.Is it an easy task??? I have bought the gaskets on e bay,i just hope i have the right ones and enough of them too.Any help or suggestions would be great.

I did this a couple of months ago, and did it wrong the first few times. There are various different thoughts, but this is what's did.

Soak the new cork for a day in water.

Take the sump off and clean with petrolaying special attention to the curved sections where the cork goes.

Squidge the new cork bits in to the curved sections and trim them off with a sharp knife so that they are about a quarter of an inch proud on each side and nice and level.

Put a bit of hylomar red very thinly along the top sides of the sump to hold the paper gaskets in place.

Lay the paper gaskets on top of the cork, the hylomar should hold them in place although obviously they won't sit flat at this stage.

Put a thin smearing of hylomar on the tops of the cork sections paying special attention to where they meet the paper gasket ( maybe a little more there).

Offer the sump up and put one screw in at the middle on each side, you will be able to do this with fingers.

Put all the other bolts in loosely.

Torque from the centre out on each side, I did mine to 10 pound feet, don't do them anymore than that as can strip the block ( although some people do them up to 18 with no I'll effects I am told).

Repeat after a good run.

In the end I sorted my oil leak by tapping the carb spacer to more effectively remove pressure from the block, although the new seal helped enormously.

The gaskets should be more 'cardboard' than 'paper'. If you had 'paper' gaskets they were for a Mini.......

And if you have a leak after installing the cork, remove them and use the rubber seals which in my opinion are far superior.

Do you know who stocks these rubber seals?

The cork seals are perfectly satisfactory if installed correctly. Rubber seals are for the 1275 engine and need to be modified for use on smaller sumps. All the usual suspects will have them if you want to go that way.
