Hi all,
I want to upgrade my 1966 , 1098, unleaded moggies performance and iv been told that i will improve by adding a HIF 38 carb , a different manifold and a bigger exhaust & air filter . I dont want to change to a 12g295 head as funds wont allow. Iv read all the threads and they say MG metro manifold etc. All very well and good if you know what your looking for on ebay and at auto jumbles, but can any one give me a shopping list with part numbers please as im confused. Iv seen a 12g787 inlet & exhaust unit on ebay with carb and air filter . is this suitable ???? if so where do you get exhausts from to suit the manifold and fit a moggie. Willing to have a go myself to keep costs down as im working on a none existent budget. Even if i have all the part numbers etc i can collect the bits over time.

Many thanks

Alan

The best power gain by far comes from fitting a 12G940 head - that's very much the first step. Then yes - larger HIF38 carb is ideal - on an MG Metro alloy inlet manifold. Just keep the original exhaust manifold and system for now. You can upgrade later if you wish. It took me all of 10 seconds to find this on ebay...... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/classic-mini- ... 1e6e8efd35

Have you uprated the brakes first?
If not, its worth thinking about stopping power before increasing velocity (I know Im a party pooper  )

Hi your not a party pooper , i plan to collect bits as i go along.
Thanks Bmc for the link. i assume that a Hif 38 and 44 are the same fitting . Also you mentioned that i had a 948 manifold , i again assume this will be a straight swop over .

Thanks again

for the help

No - it won't be a straight swop.... Come back once you win the manifold and a carb !

Well - it would fit, but the manifold still has the horrible hot spot which wastes ~ 5 bhp....... So I wouldn't fit it. Also far too expensive......

The sought after MG Metro inlet manifold is now getting to be silly money, that one will go for much more than its current bid. If you type in "Howley" inlet manifold, you may just get a better deal, as they are lesser known, but actually slightly better flowing due to being a bit longer than the MG one. Still fits with plenty of room to spare! Or companies like Minispares sell pattern ones for very reasonable prices, but may benefit from a little fettling to get rid of casting marks.
Definitely get some brakes that work before doing anything to the engine, though- and as our Scots sage (bless his Thomas the tank engine cereal bowl!) says, keep an eye out for a 1275 head, or even someone scrapping an old Metro for small money-could be worth buying just for the head and carb!!

Interesting. I was sure that the 12g787 was only fitted to the smaller bore engines and not 1300's. The exhaust outlet on that (12g787) is the same as the 'Minor' but has the bigger inlet (1.5in) and an HS4 carb.

An allegro 1300 would surely have had the bigger exhaust outlet, same as the 'Marina 1300'.
Anyway, as BMC says, that's very expensive.
