Horn issues

Just finished a 200 mile plus round trip today, and the horn started to operate by it self with light pressure on the steering wheel, and smoke from an electrical short cam out of the bakelight indictator shroud. I have pulled the three spoke wheel and the shroud off as soon I stopped, and have disconnected the earth, but now have to hunt for the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

My first check is going to be the brass almost castle like action that the wheel mounts to. And possibly the rubber sheath beneath. But I have never had this problem before and am unsure if this is the right route.

Any help would be great.

Any shorting of the horn cable just causes the horn to blare..... the smoke must come from another circuit.. So - what else is in there?

Nothing else on there. Only things attached to the steering colum are the indicator switch and the bakerlight shroud. The rubber earthing sleeve is loose in two parts. So am going to see if I can fix that. But so far am at a loss.

The brass castleated ring had worked loose and was causing the short rebuilt it and seems that there is no problem at the moment. So will keep an eye on it.
