Rear axle oil filler-cap

Post by edd_barker »

This may be a stupid question, but what do I use to open the filler cap for the rear axle so I can change the oil?

Looks like it needs a very large, flathead screwdriver but mine is too long to get under there.

Is there an obvious answer without resorting to mole grips?

Thanks,

Edd

You can buy a special "key" for the job but I always use a 3/8" ratchet drive (no socket attached).

I can see how the drain plug is a socket-shaped hole, but the filler cap is definitely a slot, not square at all.

Unless I have something not-standard attached.

I can take a picture if this is a complete mystery to everyone

Cheers!

Heres a universal axle key that should have one to fit any standard minor. Your local motor factors may have something similar.

Hi,

Do you have a set of Impact Drivers? if so you could use the flat head screwdriver bit on a standard 1/2" drive wrench.

I've not seen a slotted one, but anything is possible....

Not standard..... so yes if it's a 'slot' it will need a large screwdriver......

Annoyingly I can't get to the car to photograph what I mean till the weekend...

I might be looking at the wrong thing, what I have assumed is the filler cap protrudes from the top, drivers side of the axle casing. What I think is the cap could be the breather, it's brass with slots in?

Whereabouts should the filler plug be, is it proud or flush of the casing?

Thanks guys,

Edd

The filler plug is either in rear of casing - or in the final drive casting - or perhaps in both or perhaps in neither... You are looking at the breather........don't touch it!

You are looking for a plug the same as the drain plug in the bottom.. Early diffs were on the diff side, later axles on the back of the casing.
