Re: odometer
Hi,
I think charlie_morris_minor has a manual that he is happy to send to anyone who wants it for a speedo. Might give a better indication of what is going wrong

Re: odometer
The fault is normally a damaged cog or ratchet and usually occurs when the milometer is trying to turn several wheels at once

Re: odometer
The fault will be as Mike says. If you take it out (the odometer comes as a separate unit), you could see if anything is jammed, but they are sensitive equipment and shouldn't be messed with as a rule. Still, you can see if anything's sticking and straighten up the numbers.
Regarding legality, if you ALTER the numbers to read say, 33,460 instead of 75,890 and then sell the car on WITHOUT disclosing this, then that is illegal (fraud).
My own car has had several speedo changes, not all documented, which make the exact mileage hard to pin down, but I'm almost certain it is now 88,500.

Re: odometer
Its very fixable Ive done two speedos with exactly the same problem.
Its a little circlip thing that operates/holds on a essentric pawl onto a shaft that pulls the oddometer numbers.
Take the speedo out of the dash,
Take the chrome surrounds of the speedo by carefully undoing the peenings.
Take the glass out too.
On the back of the speedo you will see two slot headed screws either side of the speedometer drive, undo them.
The speedo head will now be loose in its casing so be careful not to bend the needle.
Look at the back of the mechanism that operates the oddmeter part and you will see a little essentric arm that climbs up essentrically and pulls over the dial numbers. That little essentric arm is held onto its axle pivot but a special circlip thing. I bet any money that it has simply worked off its axle over the many times its moved over the years. It will be somewhere within the speedo casing.
Push the circlip back on and perhaps blob a bit of superglue on the end to stop it happening again, and assemble everything and it should be working again.
Dont be scared of speedos, they are simple things really.
Good luck.
Cheers
Steve
