with the extra power from the 1275 you could use a 3.7 diff more than happily

It is a compromise between speed and acceleration, and also cost. I favour a 3.9 diff which is what was fitted to the 1275 MG.

A 3.7 would probably be ideal, but they are far more scarce than the 3.9, which as Mr Perry says is a cheaper, close option. To get the little extra, you could fit a set of ESM "wide" wheels, which would allow a 165 tyre width, and correspondingly an increase in gearing on /80 (standard) profile tyres, but could look a bit "balloony" for some eyes. 165/70 tyres on the wide rims would look more like standard and not flex so much in the sidewalls, but not help your ratio, and are also a bit of a "B****rd size, mainly used on the old Citroen BX and not much else :(
With the 3.9 diff and the bigger mains and shorter stroke of the 1275 engine, you could end up with a car which will pull away on the flat in 2nd gear, and not run out of revs until about 42-45mph. Third would be good for the mid range,20mph upwards, and not fade out until you have past the 70 mark! All good fun in the right circumstances!

The midget is lower geared than the equivilent engined Minor as it uses 13 in wheels instead of the 14 in wheels of the Minor. If you can get a set of 5 1/2 x 13 wheels you can fit 175/80/13 tyres which will give you the same circumference as 155/80/14 tyres

First step - set the valve gaps, then run a hot compression check.......
