When I adjust the rear brakes of my 1964 Traveller they eiither bind on after a couple mins or dont work (I am adjustin the brakes with the rear on axil stands). I purchased some new shoes from the club bu they appear to be biger than the old ones and I cant put the drums back on if I use them. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong would be good.[frame]Image[/frame]

A picture showing the size difference might help.
Do the pistons move freely?

Seriously ??
You should not be messing with brakes if you don't understand the basics.... At least read a manual or one of the many posts on here first.

Have you first slackened back the handbrake cables??????? Are the operating cylinder pistons seized?

Hi,

Did they bind before you adjusted them or were they ineffective? Why did you feel you needed to adjust them?
It is more than likley that the rear cylinders are sticking in which case would need replacing. I would replace both cylinders and also while you have the cylinders off get some new rear cylinder rubber boots as the the others will be perished.

Thanks for all your comments
I have built a kit car from scratch, restored an A30 and Bedford CA all without any problems so I think I might know a little about brake systems!
I installed 2 new cylinders so that should not be the problem.
I haven't tried slackining the hand brake so I will give that ago.
This restore has taken about 10 years so far due to restoring the CA for one son and the A30 for my other son.
I will take a picture of both shoese as soon as i can and put that up here. They look the same as the ones on the car but the foot that sits in the cylinder is a little bit longer.

It will be the cables...but if the 'foot' looks a little long - just file it down.......but that really shouldn't be necessary.
