recently purchesed a smiths clock off of ebay, any one know how to test how its working?
and how to wire one up perhaps?

Is it electric, battery or wind up? A photo would help
How much did you pay for a clock which you don't know if it works?

I just use the little clock on my wrist.......why would you need anything else ????

Connect it to a 12v battery on a bench, assuming negative earth, then the contact at the rear goes to live, the body of the unit to earth.

Changing the time is supposed to start it, but sometimes doesn't........ so you need to give the balance wheel a very gentle touch

In the car I found it easier to run the live across from the ignition permanent live rather than remove light switches etc.

So the clock only runs when the Ign is on?? If you must have a clock (does it chime? or go Cuckoo ?? ) then run it through a fuse.... Lilac wire is the one to look for.

Please re read the post Roy, I said the ignition permanent live, which is the feed from the fusebox, not the switched side.

So it's not the 'IGN' peramanent live - that implies a feed that is permanently live when the Ign is ON...... I think you just mean 'permanent live' whether the Ign is on or not - ie the Lilac wire...which is fused. If you tap off from the live feed to the Ign switch - it is NOT fused and not a good place to connect anything.
