Hi Firstly I must apologise for what amounts to an intrusion.

this message lacks any solid information but I feel compelled to mention that I have received a faulty component that originated at Beaulieu Autojumble. As I believe another is to be held soon I just worried that another classic car owner may get preyed upon.

It could be that the ebay vendor who passed the item on to me (his project had folded) was in some way to blame and I have not ascertained this yet, maybe never will. But the alleged recon gearbox - which had been cleaned and painted black - was a box of scrap. I have bought another since and had better luck, but I strongly recommend that people get bona fide contact details from anyone, absolutely anyone, that they make any sort of deal with.

If i get any details I shall update this message.

I've managed a similar story of buying a scrap gearbox - mine was fromlocal paper advert 10 years ago.. The guy said he was clearing out as he was moving house.

Bearings were gone and it leaked oil profusely..

Any second hand part is a risk - I've been lucky with cheap engines, and only had one bad experience with gearboxes. A friend of mine got an unusable MM sidevalve engine from a reputable seller - the engine was refunded but £xxx's of garage bills for fitting it were lost.
Cleaning & painting a scrap engine/gearbox is enough to convince most people that the part is good. What is more important is a guarantee and/or some evidence of the parts replaced. Even that is open to abuse as there was an ebay seller using the same parts & rebuild receipts many times over (photocopied receipts) when selling repainted Minor engines.
