grinding, squealing reverse gear

Hi folks,

I've just returned from Shetland and my wife has asked me to look into Oswald's gearing. While I was away she had a couple of occasions on which, when she tried to put the car into reverse, it wouldn't go into gear at all and gave her a horrific squealing screeching grinding noise instead.

No jokes about her not knowing where the reverse gear is, please - she's not a mechanic but she can handle a car well!

Strangely since I've been back he's been behaving very well and giving no difficulties, so it sounds like an intermittent problem.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Incidentally, I've been getting a tiny grind at times when I put him into first and third gears (not second and fourth though). Related issue?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Malcolm

Dragging clutch?? That can cause problems on gear engagement and if lefgt unchecked it will cause premature wear/failure of the synchros.

As for squealing - Have you checked if there is enough oil in the box?
she's not a mechanic but
Well beign a mechanic doesn't mean you know how to use a gearbox... (long story related to work..... just another day at the office)

release bearing if the squewling is with the clutch pressed
sounds like time for a new clutch, or may be just adjustment
