just recieved my timing chain replacment kit from esm and in it is 2 rubber ring tensioners,
theres nothing like this fitted currently, can anyone explain how these go please?

If it's a single row chain (Simplex) they should go in deep slots either side of the teeth in the crankshaft chainwheel.

Dig deep into the grooves as they very quickly wear flat.... Rubbish design and completely useless at tensioning anything let alone a chain thrashing around.....

Far far better to fit the Mini type tensioner - it works.

is that easy to do?
what parts do i need and do i then leave out the rubber bands?
i want to do this job once only and properly so any mod that improves things makes sence to me

Hi,
I understood that it is a poor technique.

But I would understand assembly.

When I disassembled it had not tensioner.(on simple chain) I do not know how to put them.

There 's no grooves on my gears.

I already bought this parts and I need to restart quickly.

You have the camshaft sprocket for use WITH a tensioner, but all the other parts are for use WITHOUT the tensioner. So you need the earlier cam sprocket which will have grooves on both sides of the teeth to take the hopeless rubber rings. Where did you get the parts? Did you think you were buying the Mini tensioner system? To buy that new is uber expensive - so if you can't salvage the parts from a Mini engine, I suggest it would be best to fit duplex sprockets and chain which seems to be more reasonably priced these days. http://www.morrisminorspares.net/basket.php

I think I make an order for duplex chain.
The pictures of parts come from my engine.
The mixture of parts thus before my purchase.

Do you think I can rebuild like that and change by duplex chain when I received?

Because before to open my engine I have no problem with timing chain. Just refresh cylinder head and change ring and bearing.

There are no tensioning system with a double chain?

For a standard fitment duplex chain there is no tensioner.
The chain relies on its additional strength/load area (more teeth/chain links) to resist wear and the theory is that a duplex chain will last longer even without tensioner.
What you must do when fitting a duplex set up is to countersink the two 1/4" holes at the bottom of the front engine plate and use countersunk screws.

I looked on moss in France there is a picture, the crown is mine. There is no groove to put the tension rings.

I have called and confirmed that there is an intermediary release between tension rings and metallic mini tensioners.

The answer is NOT ADVISED - you need a cam sprocket with grooves to take the rubber rings. I suppose it will run without the rings- but it will be noisy.

You cannot run the simplex timing chain without some form of tensioner. The chain will on the slack return side hit and eventually wear through the timing chain cover

You have the large camshaft sprocket and the small crankshaft sprocket and timing chain.
What you do not have is the rest i.e. the tensioner assy and the required timing cover.[frame][/frame]

As I read it though Phil - this what he has removed from his engine - single blade cam sprocket with no grooves. I'm not sure where the rubber rings have come from.....
