bad rattle

i was just driving along today, and i pulled into a side road and this very loud rattle came from the gearbox/back of the engine bay, its only when i rev. so i managed to get it into to 4th and sat in that the whole way home, its only in 1st,2nd, and 3rd. any ideas?

Is there a 'good' rattle...? Oh dear - assuming there is oil in the box ?? Sounds like bearings have gone - in 4th the drive is straight through the box so the laygear (and it's bearings) do nothing. In all the other gears the drive has to pass through the laygear and I guess that's what's rattling. Stop using it and look for a gearbox urgently.... Is it a 948 (smooth case) box or a 1098 (rib case) box ?
