Front bumper mounting studs

Yesterday I decided to try removing the front bumper as I plan to do some remedial work to the grille at some stage.
Clearly the nuts had been on for a very long time & I had previously soaked them.
One came off with a big hammer & a struggle...the stud sheared on the other side though.
Despair!
However I find that, if the washer & spring washer is left off, there is enough thread for the nut to get a grip & tighten up hard.
Fortunately a friend had a spare 7/16 W nut in his workshop.
Relief!
Perhaps a more elegant solution would be to cut the threaded portion stud off & then drill & tap the mounting to take another, new, threaded piece.
Of course if this somehow goes pear shaped I'd be in an even worse position.
I wonder if anyone has had a similar job & what was the outcome?
I am inclined to think that it will be OK the way I have done it...can't see the nut coming loose...perhaps I shouldn't say that!
