Twin Carbs and Crank Case Breathers.....

I am currently trying to fit Twin 1.25" SU carburettors to my 1098cc Minor. I have however come across some problems. The crank case breathing cylinder from the side of the engine impeeds the carburettor closest to the front of the car from engaging with the studs by blocking the float chamber
i can remove this problem by spacing the carbs from the inlet manifold by approx 1", but this throws up another problem.
The float chamber on the carb closest to the bulk head is blocked by the brass pipe connecting to the fuel pump
Does anybody know of any solutions to this problem. I am using an inlet manifold for a mini.

Using a single 1 1/2 inch carb would solve the problem, and it is generally accepted that the performance is equal, without the hassle of balancing. However if you want to fit the twin set up, you could get the canister re-brazed in another position or there is one that has a curved pipe that may suit, I'm not sure but it could be a Sprite one. I had a Cooper s fitted as you intend, but clearance was not an issue, maybe there are various types of canisters.

i would have thought you could remove the breather cannister and weld over the hole ( of fit a pushrod cover with out the breather)
And fit a rocker box with a breather instead?

It depends on which type of breathing system you have on
your 1098. If you have the cannister emerging from one of
the tappet covers then originally the pipe from here went
to a 'mushroom' shaped assembly on the inlet manifold and
then to the CARB, or the pipe went straight to the CARB, not
to the AIR FILTER? The oil filler cap would be the type with
a wire mesh filter in it and was the air INLET. So, if your twin
carbs have the pipe fitted which accepts the breather rubber
pipe then you will have to alter the cannister fitting to suit
the available space so that you retain the present system of
breathing. If your carbs do NOT have a connection for the
breather pipe then you would need to fit the rocker box type
which has a breather outlet on it AND change the oil filler cap
to a SOLID type(no wire mesh). The tappet cover pipe would
now become the air INLET and would most easily be changed
by getting one from an earlier 1098. Your problem is now where
to fit the OUTLET breather pipe from the top of the rocker box.
Into the air filters is the proper answer. I don't know which type
of air filters you are thinking of but don't fit pancakes, they are
very inefficient! But then again, as has been pointed out in the
earlier posts you would be far better off fitting a single 1 1/2"
carb anyway!

thanks for your help, i have a had a look around my garage and found a couple of things that may help me. i have a rocker box with a solid filter cap and intake air pipe and also have the old type tappet chest cover from my old engine. i'll give these items a go and if i come across any problems i'll plead for more help. thank you

That's good, ( the rocker cover pipe is an OUTLET by the way).

Success!! The carbs are now fitted, albeit with lots of cuts burns and short sharp four letter words aimed directly at my car. they really now just need a good tune with a carb-balancer now. however the brake light switch broke today so that can wait a bit
Thanks for all your help guys, really appreciate it
