Twisting of Brake and Clutch pedal

I've got a Traveller by accident,I didn't mean to,but I have :oops: . When braking hard(ish) and changing down I get the weird feeling that there is some "twisting" under my feet,it's quite disconcerting and doesn't happen on my Saloon. Any ideas?What is the connection between the Clutch and Brake pedals and what Mods could rectify this.

The clutch pedal comes complete with the shaft that goes through bushes on either side of the chassis leg and the brake pedal turns on this shaft on it's own bushes in between the chassis legs. You will need to remove the master cylinder cover (about 10 large cross head screws) to get access to the pedal assembly, then you can get some oil on the bronze bushes, work the pedals in opposite directions and hopefully they will free off and turn independently again.

If the shaft is worn you can buy a new shaft complete with clutch pedal.

It would also be worth renewing the bushes in the brake pedal. If the shaft is worn, then either a whole clutch pedal assembly can be purchased, or just the shaft, and weld it to your existing pedal after removing the old shaft. Things to watch for: To remove clutch pedal, first remove clutch operating links, then undo nut on outside edge of chassis leg, under the floor. Remove the gearbox cover completely. Pedal then slides out of housing towards gearbox. To remove brake pedal, you will need to remove return spring. You do NOT need to remove operating rod - it just slides out of the master cylinder. Refitting the spring can be "interesting", but plenty of hints on that. When refitting, lubricate everything copiously.

If you are good with engineering and have the correct tools (or at least access to them!) then you can drill a hole through the centre of the shaft, tap the end and fit a grease nipple; also drill across the shaft where the pedal bushes sit. This allow application of grease on a regular basis and greatly prolongs the life of the shaft and bushes.

Sometimes the spacer in between the brake and clutch pedal can seize meaning the clutch wont return properly when you have braked. I have had good results with heating this spacer to free it off, sometimes vice grips are enough to get it started and then a good oiling can help. If this doesnt work it will probably mean replacement as detailed by Chickenjohn and Simmitc

I'm going to have a look this weekend,and see if changing the oil filter and seals will stop this annoying oil leak. I'll try and free off the bushings/spacer first cos my saloon failed its MOT today,and needs more welding!!!! It cost me £450 to get the welding done I knew about,and the tester said the new welding was "shoddy" at best. I'll try my original guy,who was on holiday when I got the last lot of welding done,as he served his time with a Moggie restorer in the 80's.
