Will this coil work

I picked up a coil today at a car boot sale for 50p, I bought it because it has some lovely embossing on the top which says CI made in England.

I don't really mind either way (just wanted to save it from the crusher) but, assuming it works, would it be suitable as a spare for my minor?

it is 12v and has 8027 41S stamped on it. Can't find anything on the Internet, is there a safe way of checking?

Thanks,

Tom

Stick a meter on it - between the two small terminals. Should read 3.2 Ohms if it's good. If it does - try it on the Minor ! If it works - leave it on, and carry the one you took off as the spare......which you will never need, because it's 'never' the coil....

Damn, 4.1

Oh well, it still looks nice.

Hmmm - strange! Because the 9 volt coil used for 'ballast' systems is ~ 2 ohms. Any chance the meter is not accurate ? Check by measuring the coil on your car! It will still work I guess - but the current flow will be reduced and therefore the spark will be less.

It was a dodgy multimeter, just tested it on a very fancy one and it reads at 3.31ohms.

Completely off-topic but anybody tried the Lucas Sports Coil?

Most of the feedback on this coil indicate its no better than a standard coil when fitted to a box standard moggie :-? :-?
whenever I used these coils back in the old days I never felt any difference, just a waste of pennies :(

stick to your standard coil and all will be well :D

The Sports coil can only produce better sparks by burning more current through the points....... and the Minor engine doesn't need (or benefit from) 'better sparks'......so don't waste money!

No I'm not buying one, just wondering what the performance increase is, if any. I would have thought that it doesn't matter about the spark so much as the mixture that produces better results.

Sports coils have been around for donkeys years and I believe they were fitted as standard equipment to high-performance cars of the 1950s.

Well - anything to turn an extra buck! Nothing makes the owner feel more 'special' than to think they have 'Sports' parts on their car....and of course it adds a good 10 mph to the top speed......
