I have a 948 engine and nix that I want to rebuild, both for something to do and also in case my 803 ever blows up. Tried to find a spare 803 without success. I want to buy a rotatable engine stand to mount the engine on to work on as I have limited bench space. Looking at the pics online I am wondering how the engine is held by the stand - there seems to be only a small bracket. Can someone illuminate me?

Seriously - a bench or old desk is best for this job - you can turn the engine every which way, and no hassle to attach/detach it.

I have an engine stand which on wheels and has a plate on the end with four moveable arms. These have bolt holes and can be positioned so that they bolt onto the back plate holes or the front plate holes. The plate also rotates so that the engine can be turned upside down. The snag is that when you have finished assembling one end of the engine you have to lift it off with a hoist, turn the engine around and bolt it on to the other end. The other snag is that I cannot get it to fit my side valve engine.

I'm with bmcecosse on this, I did mine on the floor as I used a jack to get it out.
A bench or the like, would bring it up so you could stand while working on it and keep it out of the way.
I've got enough rarely used tools around the place already!

I see your point. Just that I have a rather cramped garage and not much bench space at all. Perhaps a sturdy old desk might be the answer if I can fit it somewhere

It's much better - you have somewhere to put down the tools/oilcan etc. I can't imagine working from a silly stand - and having to reach to a bench for everything? Doesn't make sense!

I did think of making a skate, the sort of thing removal men use to move furniture, to make it more mobile as it blocked the entrance to my garage and access to the motorbikes in the back for a while.

Working on the floor did mean that the engine tended to stay still when I was loosening and tightening bolts though.
