Series II steering wheel centering

Hello,
Yesterday I took the steering wheel of the car (1955 Series 2), it was the first time I've had the wheel off since I've owned the car in > 8 years.
What I found is that the wheel had been placed out of line of the slot in the steering column, and obviously no woodruff key used. I imagine this was done at some point to ensure the wheel is straight.
I imagine it's not so safe like this though, although the wheel is a very tight fit on the tapered column and has been no problem so far. I'm guessing that woodruff key is there for a good reason! So refitting it I plan to do it properly.
Is the only adjustment for these cars at the track-rod end, to ensure the wheel is centered when driving in a straight line? and should the wheel be fitted dry, or is a little grease required? at present it is a very tight dry fit.
