Headlamp flash switch splitscreen

Post by JOWETTJAVELIN »

Hi all,

on the splitscreen there is no function which allows you to just flash the headlamps like pulling a switch stalk toward you.

My question is can you wire the foot switch so you can flash the lights with bakelite side & headlamp switch in the 'off' position AND keep the main beam capability for when the lights are on? Or will I need a separate switch?

P.S. It is no use giving me wiring colours as they are all 56 years old and well blackened now.

Of course you CAN do this - but why ?? First find a suitable switch (why foot??) - run a feed from an ignition switched source (so white is unfused and green IS fused) - to the switch and then from the switch to the blue/white main beam feed. Simples !
If using the white source - you should run the feed through a fuse on the way to the switch (foot or otherwise). And there's no point ignoring wire colours - it's the ONLY way to identify what goes where..........

Thanks - I want to do this because there is no way of flashing the headlamps as you would on a modern car unless you turn the sidelamps and the then headlamps on.... as the foot switch is already there on the splitscreen I think it's best to use that, plus I can't mount a column switch as the whole thing turns round.

Ahh - you want to use the EXISTING foot switch?? That won't be possible unless you arrange for some other way to switch the headlamps from dip to main beam.......... But why 'flash' the headlamps anyway? It doesn't mean anything!!

Yes I wanted to use the existing foot switch, I feared it might not be possible.

Flashing the headlamps is necessary for safety, ie flashing them as a warning or, conversely, to say 'thank you' or letting truck drivers know they've cleared you on the motorway and can pull back over.

Headlamp flash is useless - it can indeed mean 'thanks', or 'I'm giving way to you', or just as easily 'I'm coming through - get out the way!'. Best not to do it. On the later cars with the two step flick switch, it is entirely possible to arrange for the first position to bring on the headlights + sidelights, and the second position only the sidelights. Thus a simple flick of the switch will bring on the headlamps, which can be left in high beam position. I only ever use headlamps on any of my cars to alert others to my presence - the standard switch will do that - just pull it!

the foot switch is just a directional one switching the feed from dip to h beam wires after being switched on by the main switch. The only way to do it ,if you realy must 'and dont want to add a switch to the dash area,is to get a micro switch and wire the lights though it to the high beam (Fused ) then mount the miro switch on the floor near to the footswitch, under the carpet to hide it,Most moderns have a micro switch inside the car to operate the brake light, get one from a scrapper.

Thanks very much. I have been using the fog lamp to flash but most people just look on incredulously and wonder what this yellow lamp flashing is.

I manage quite well on the odd time with the headlight pull switch on my Series MM.
Anyway I think that you have more important things to attend to
Wiring colours:- Blue = black, blue/white = black, blue/red = black, black = black.
That is why I used plastic covered wiring for my new loom

Thanks for the colours, if I can decipher them.

As you know Mike, I've got enough on my plate without a bleeding re-wire! :-?
