Hello Arkright,
I'm not sure what the effect of the electronic ignition but you might as well give it a go. It needs a feed and return and then pick up the negative side of the coil to give the input.
I don't really see any reason why it shouldn't work.

Did the rev counter work OK? I'm hoping to fit one myself, and wondered how sucessful you'd been?

Why do you want to count the revs ??

To see how fast the engine is turning?

Plus, rev counters are a nice 'add on' and if you like instruments then that's a good one to have.

Waste of time ! The only gauge worth having is the oil pressure !!

Well, if you're going for waste of time, that's pretty much also a waste of time, since my 1098 managed to maintain 45lb/sq in with virtually no oil in it (none registering on the dipstick) after overheating (also without managing to perturb the water temp gauge).

Rev counters are a nice addition, particularly if you're used to having them. I don't really *need* mine, but it's a nice period item (unlike my ipaq holder which is a non-period item :) ).

I also want to install a rev counter and oil pressure gauge, still have some room left in my dashboard lid

I find the big gauge in the middle quite handy too.

I'll let you tell the motorsport world that rev counters are a waste of time..... or is that different?

We've had this discussion before, haven't we? Surely the fuel gauge is pointless too - lots of older cars (like Fiat 500s) don't have those, just a little lightbulb. The speedometer, too - just keep up with the traffic. Model Ts didn't have speedos and look how many of those they sold :/

I ran my Volvo for years without a Speedo - I just used the Rev counter and a bit of mental arithemetic. Good job it had a rev counter otherwise I'd have had to pay hundreds to get the speedo fixed :-D

It was said that Sir Malcolm Sargeant, the famous conductor, could tell the speed he was going by the note emitted by his gearbox. Apparently at 30mph it emitted 'middle C'. So he didn't need a speedo or a rev counter :)

The bulb behind my speedo on the MZ is a bit flakey, and I've tried both a new bulb and wiggling/cleaning connectors - so I'm assuming the cable's knackered somewhere (suprise suprise) - so quite a lot of my late-evening/night riding* is done by approximating my speed off the rev-counter.

* as opposed, obviously, to knightriding ;-)

on that topic, I was in Londons Square mile the other night, and came across Knightrider street, how cool would it be to live there?

My speedo is in need of calibration due to having non-standard bits (Sierra gearbox, Escort rear axle), so until I spend £40 and get it recalibrated I'm going off my rev counter for a speed reading.......
