Leaf springs

Hi,
I have just removed and replaced my leaf springs, as my old ones were tired and no longer in the best condition.
Can these old springs be re-tensioned and reused? Or are they now fit only for scrap?
They are the 5 leaf saloon type. If they're of any use I'll bring them along to the national rally and offer them free to anyone who wants them.
Many thanks,
Mike.

I believe old springs can be retensioned and reused. Considering the lack of quality (hearsay) among new springs nowadays, you probably should have that done and either keep them or sell them on.

The cost of having that done far exceeds the cost of new springs........ Just hang on to them - when the new springs sag you may want to draught on an extra leaf from the old springs to stiffen them up again.

Hi,
Thanks for the information, I have fitted 7 leaf traveller springs (straight swap - along with new nyloc bushes and bump stops). So now that I know they can be re-tensioned and reused I shall do as I said originally and bring them with me to the national rally. I will leave them in front of my car with a note to say that if anyone wants them to help themselves.
So if anyone reading this does want some free 5 leaf saloon springs, that's where they'll be...................... :D
Best wishes,
Mike.

Hi,
I tend to carry a fairly comprehensive toolkit in the boot, as I don't have a garage and I always like to be able to fix things at the roadside if I can, rather than get stranded (worst case and I need a relay I am in the AA).
All of which weighs heavy on the rear and she is my everyday car.
Also I have heard / read that others regard it as an improvement / upgrade anyway, since mine needed replacement I took the opportunity. She sits a little high at the moment but I have only just done them and they will need to bed in and settle.
Regards,
Mike.

And if you really don't like it, you can always take out one or two leaves.....
