That's what is supposed to happen when you press the dip switch, it switches between dip and main beam, but if the main headlamp bulbs are blown then you get no light
It could be a wiring fault as well so you need to check it out

I don't really understand what you mean, so let's start with what should happen.
When the main light switch is on in its first position, just the sidelights should be on.
In its second position, the sidelights stay on, and the headlamps are also turned on. The floor-mounted dipswitch toggles the headlights between two states: in one state, the dipped beam filaments in the headlamp bulbs (or sealed beam units) are turned on; in the other state, the two main beam filaments are turned on instead of the dipped beam filaments, and the blue main beam warning light is lit.
So you should "loose" (itym "lose") the dipped beam, but you should get main beam instead. If you don't get any headlight at all in the main beam position, but the warning light is on, your dip switch is working OK, so the fault is probably a poor connection in the bullet connector where the single blue/white cable from the dipswitch splits into two - one going to each headlamp.

Try a squirt of switch cleaner and WD40 up under the cap of the dip switch. then work the switch a few times. Because of its position on the floor a lot of crud can make its way into the switch and give some odd doings.....

Yes, as above, check the four way bullet connector down by the inner offside wing. There will be four blue/white wires in one connector. One is the feed coming from the dipswitch, one goes back to the blue light on the speedo (you know those 2 are good cos the blue lamp works) and the other 2 blue/whites go to the 2 headlights.
