[frame][/frame]
can anyone shed any light on what this is?
It's on the inlet side of the carburetter, and is not on the spare (knackered) carb i have.
I can only think that it will be detramental to the air flow and, therefore, performance.
does anyone know why it might be in there?
would there be any harm in filling it down?[frame][/frame]

Not seen that before! I doubt it's doing any major harm - is it solidly fixed in the body, or does it slide?

I've never seen one of those before

Has the carb got a part no? AUCXXX, AUDXXX etc?

on inspection, it definately look home made, so i may file it down.

perhaps someone retrofitted a MAF/MAP sensor in there once for an experiment, and then crudely blocked it up again?

can't think of any logical explanation.

According to the SU website, AUD 359 is a carb from a Mk 2 850 cc Mini 69-70? Not sure if that helps or gives any clue as to why the bar is there.

It would be ideal for water injection......

Is there a screw thread in the hole this thing is blocking? If so it might have been for a vacuum gauge which somebody took off when they sold the car (I would do the same).

You might do more harm than good if you try to remove it. Also if you file it there is a risk of metal particles falling into the carb and engine. Leave well alone is my advice.

it's a push fit, and came out with a little gentle persuasion. I've filed it down smooth and reinserted flush with the port. might thread and go for a vacuum gauge at some point -- you never know

It's on the inlet side - so no vacuum to measure...... Vacuum gauges are utterly useless anyway.

Good grief - much confusion over the names of parts.....and wouldn't you have the fixings loosened off (or at least have the necessary spanners to hand) if you were doing this? He also does most of the actual dis-assembly off camera !

you are not very keen on diagnostic instruments?

Strobe lights are useless, and now vacuum gauges.

Admittedly they have fallen out of use but they can diagnose a variety of engine faults and assist with tune ups, if you want to take the trouble to understand them. I use mine for my P.I. system, so a slightly rarer but necessary use.

Plus vacuum gauges look good on the instrument panel, especially the Smiths one. In the leaflet it actually tells you what the readings mean, and shows you the direct effect of your driving style. This can be used to improve your fuel consumption by keeping the needle in the right segment.
