Would anyone know what causes my engine to "run on " for about 5 seconds after it has been turned off ,mixture and timing are ok .

Obviously 'mixture and timing' are NOT ok! Why do you think they are???? What colour are the plugs? Clean air filter and adjust mix till they are light beige after a good run. Also advance timing till you hear some pinking - then back it off very slightly so it's 'not quite' pinking. And check the vacuum advance is working as it should. Consider a different brand of petrol too.....

This happened to my old Austin Allegro... turned out the timing was way out, so get that checked.
It is useless adjusting the carburettor settings without first making sure everything else is spot-on, i.e. plugs, points, timing, vac. advance etc.
If you're sure the timing and mixture is fine, then try a higher octane petrol as BMC says or, the only thing I can recommend, a decoke.
