Mini crank damper pulley

Can anybody help with this crank damper that I am trying to fit.

I was told it came off a mini but the extra bit of pressed metal on the back stops it fitting fully home. It looks to be only held on with 3 small rivets. Has anybody used one like this or know if it is OK to remove this extra bit?

What is that 'lip' below the oil seal? Has the cover plate been bent up?

Yes, it is the very edge of the timing cover (mini one) where the fixing bolts go through. It is like that all the way around. Was brand new when fitted so it's how it should be. Probably highlighted by the oil leak! :D
I have removed the bit of pressed metal, simple task of drilling out the 3 small rivets and it popped off. Fitted to the engine now but there is a vibration when started up that wasn't there before so it's coming back off and the original pulley going back on. :(
At least I have satisified my curiosity.

That damper should be fine ! And a VERY worthwhile addition to the A series engine. I doubt it's causing the vibration...... It should fit with the steel ring on - but no great harm removing it.

Thanks BMC, glad your back. :) Yes, I think your right about it fitting, it just looked too close to the cover before it was tightened up. The ring came off easy enough and the pulley fitted OK. I was just a bit concerned about the (small) vibration and as the engine has to do a few more weeks/miles of service I went back to the old pulley and the noise had gone away. :-?

Strange ! Does the damper look ok - outer ring still concentric with the inner ??

Yes all looks ok. Would having to turn over the extra weight of the damper accentuate any bearing rumbles? Current engine is well worn after 11 years of heavy use...

Don't think so - but you never know.
