universal joints

Post by moggyadventurer »

Hi

How do you know when a uj is failing or needing replacing?

What are the symptoms?

interesting. I picked up the problem on the way to work yesterday and it gradually got worse on the way home.
It at first sounded as of something was squeeking at first before sounding more cludder like. I did think it may be the torsion bar as it meets the crossmember, or even the front rear spring hanger. Sound appeared to be coming from centre of car (crossmember region).

get hold of the prop and turn it back and forth while watching the ju there will be some slack in the axle so the prop will move but there should be NO movement in the ujs if there is change as a matter of urgency, When they are going the sound is more like a clonk as you change gear and take up the drive and when you take your foot off the gas at speed as the engine takes over the braking. You don't normally hear them when just driving along
