Which exhaust advice

I will shortly be changing the exhaust on my 4 door saloon but cannot decide which system to use ,is it best to stick with the standard mild steel version or do I swop to a stainless item.If I use the standard m/steel version is it a one piece item and if so is it only possibe to fit with a high rise ramp, if I go to the stainless item it seems to be supplied in 3 parts so I assume it is possible to fit it myself , but what if any are the isuues with it, ie is it a lot noisier than the mild steel version ,also I would not be happy to lose the standard Morris exhaust noise

having sought this advice previously - concensus was go stainless steel as it is much longer lasting and 2 or 3 piece..... i wouldn't be fitting my own as i am a technical incompetent - but that was what i was told....

New exhausts will be slightly noisier but will quieten down as the pipes get lined with soot.
if you are keeping the car then s/steel is the obvious choise, mine has been on my Series MM for over 20 years

It is possible to fit a one piece exhaust to a Minor- I've done it! Although the two piece exhaust is much easier to fit.

BTW, even the mild steel exhaust seems to last for years on a Minor and compared to many other cars is very cheap so I personally wouldn't bother with a stainless exhaust. Besides which, these stainless exhausts can eventually rust and crack as well. There are different grades of "stainless" steel.

A one-piece system can be fitted reasonably easily. The issue is normally getting the tail to go far enough back over the axle to allow you to get the front 'downpipe' through the aperture into the engine bay. The way I get around fitting, and removing, one piece systems, is to jack the car up and support the body on axle stands, not the axle. This then allows the axle to drop away from the body, giving more room, between the axle and the body, for the 'over-axle bend' to come further back, giving you just enough clearance to pop the downpipe through into the engine bay.

You can buy a mild steel system three times over to get the same price as a stainless system. Just depends if you want to replace it more often!

you won't loose the distinctive sound if you fit a ss exhaust. mine sounds grand!

I have been looking at exhausts recently, there appears to be a 0.8 and a 1.1 version. Do these figures relate to the pipe diameter? Anyone know if there are any reasonably priced larger bore systems available?

If you go SS make sure you get a 'low noise' version and not one of the cheaper ones floating about..... had a bad experience in the trav with a VERY noisy SS system, could barely hear myself think above the racket.... ended up throwing the thing out and going for a better quality one.... and I can hear my radio once more :)
