Rusty seams

So I've been going round my new shell, hitting it with a hammer, and I've discovered that the seam/roof-channel is rusted through on one side, just behind the back edge of the bonnet ... I suspect that the seams are structural, so I was wondering what the best way of repairing this was.
The rusty bit is just a hole, but to get back to clean metal I'll need to grind out about an inch and a half ... my current plan is to clean it up a bit then stitch the panels together with a line of weld & then rebuild the channel with a plate added on the top.
Does this sound reasonable?
