Hi guys -- need some advice.
I'm nearly finished stripping my gearbox with a badly damaged bellhousing ready to transfer its internals to my 'unknown' replacement.
How do i remove the first motion shaft?
The haynes book of lies seems to show it simple coming througn the front of the bellhpusing once the bearing's been tapped out as one piece., but the gear on the back of it's too big for the hole :/
any advice greatly appreciated

Take everything else out and then tap the bearing out to the INSIDE of the gearbox ;)

Remove all of the bolts from the bottom, remove the reverse gear, then use a lever with the 'pip' on the 3rd motion shaft to wind that out ... once you have everything out of the inside, tap the 1st shaft back in and then keep tapping until it pops out on the inside ;)

Great that I'm not the only one who is mad enough to rebuild their own box :D

Alain,
You are not alone! I'm rebuilding the original box on the TD at the moment-very similar. Luckily enough there was a very good DVD available on how to do it.

Declan

DVD? ... dang I could have used that before starting out on this odyssey ... thus far I'm about 80% of the way there, however moving house and a new shell has put a hold on my gearbox antics ... looking towards getting the new box mated to the 1275 I recently picked up :)
