Rear wheel bearings

Post by Declan_Burns »

I had to replace a rear wheel bearing this week and found that the unbranded new bearing from a reputable supplier was rubbish. With the bearing fitted there was about 1.5mm play at the outer edge of the tyres. I removed the bearing. It is stamped 6207C3E which is a metric bearing measuring 72x35x17mm. The C3 refers to the clearance.

I replaced it with an original bearing which is stamped R&M 37-C97 which had no play at all. Surely a C3 bearing with increased clearance is not correct for a moggy hub?
Has anybody had similar problems? I have mailed the company but as expected have had no response.

Declan

I use a lot of bearings, and cannot afford failures in the field. In this country, the company I use (can't advertise, but they deal with simply bearings) offer a full range of all grades. An unshielded SKF Explorer 6207 is £7.82 +VAT from them, not worth skimping at that price!
However,I quite understand that it is easier to tap in "Morris Minor rear wheel bearing" to one of our specialist suppliers rather than stripping the thing to get to the numbers, but if you then receive rubbish, then no time or greasiness has actually been saved!

Les,
I don't really care where it comes from as long as it's fit for purpose-although I would prefer a Swedish bearing as I never had a problem with them. What does concern me, is that I suspect the supplier is selling inferior bearings and is possibly unaware of it.

Let your Supplier know Declan, they may have got the wrong stock in. A quick look at some of my old bearings shows that some are C3, some not. I seem to remember there is also a specification for bearings that run in oil as opposed to those packed with grease....

Looking at that site that deals simply with bearings the C3 appears to apply to bearings that have a greater clearance to allow for expansion when running hot. Also the spec I was thinking of was the maximum rpm the bearing is designed to run at differs if it is running in grease or oil.

@linear ... surely it's only advertising if you actually work for, or own shares in the company?

Or are the mods so vicious these days that we cant share tips at all?

PM me with the name either way, I could use a decent bearing supplier ;)

It's perfectly ok to mention firms providing GOOD service. The restriction is on mentioning BAD service...... So we are not allowed to tell you which firms/suppliers to avoid! Except by PM of course........
