Hi,
I've got a 1962 Minor with 5-speed gearbox and Marina engine, axles and front disc brakes. When I brake I'm getting a quite severe knocking sound that I can feel through the steering wheel. I've had brake calipers off and reconditioned them, the discs appear not to be warped at all, everything is tight. I've also replaced the steering rack which has quietened the noise but I'm concerned that whatever it is will proceed to wear out my new rack.
The noise only occurs during mid-pressure braking. If I brake very softly or very hard it doesn't occur.
My dad has suggested the the stub-axle could be out of true...?
HELP!!!!

Is it a single knocking sound or a repatative one, you may have worn suspension bushes or worn eyebolts and bushes how long is it since you replaced them as the original rubber type only last a few years with regular use which is why many owners replace them with poly bushes.

Hi Kevin,
It's a repetitive knocking and relative to the speed I'm doing when I brake. I did think the damper bushes looked quite old but I can't see how that would cause the noise, especially only in such a narrow band of braking pressure. Can you recommend where I can get new bushes?

Are the tie rods between the lower suspension arm and the chassis in place, secure and their bushes in good condition?

I'll have a look tonight and let you know. Thanks for the suggestions so far though.

There are quite a few bushes in total at the front and they are often the cause of many strange noises and knocks and clicks, the eyebolts also wear if the bushes are shot and are not easy to see in place, if you do replace them get a complete set from sombody like Bull Motif or East Sussex Minors.
The other thing that could be worth doing is to raise the front and spin the wheels and with someone in the car press the pedal to see if the second person can hear/see anything untoward
