Just been doing some ringing round: Comma 5l sae 40 ( straight 40 oil) £18.49 including VAT. Google Comma Oil stockists, it'll give you your closest stockist. Millers Oils, in Brighouse West Yorks, will do 25l sae40 oil £71.75 + vat, any one want to chip in?? Millers also do an sae50 oil.

Aye -but for the dampers you only need 0.5 litre for a 'lifetime' supply. You will get sae 30 in Tesco garden section - and probably get sae 40 in a motorcycle place - but don't be mugged into buying 'fork oil' ..........

This has reminded me, does anyone remember the link for when they reconditioned the shock absorbers?

Not sure if this is any help cos I have'nt worked out linking stuff yet,but a guy called Declan seems to do a lot of advanced Taking Stuff To Bits AND Putting Stuff Back Together Again & I did read stuff he'd done with Dampers. It all made sense when I read it!

I did the flush through of old oil in my Front and Rear Dampers a couple of weeks ago,but due to "circumstances beyond my control" was unable to test said service element. I removed the rear Dampers to do the work as I needed to take them off and copperslip them to make it easier to do a welding job this week. I removed them complete with "elbows" and chassis connection arms if I was to refill rear Dampers again I would still remove them totally.It is hard to fill the dampers with oil AND expel air at the same time without a vice.A vice is on my Birthday list, as the Teenager I used instead of a vice has refused to hold the Dampers as I pour Hypoid Oil all over him, again,youth of today eh!
BMC,I used sae.30 oil,I purged both sets of Dampers well of Air,I cannot believe how much difference a bit of oil,a litre cost £5 and I used 1/2l including flushing so £2.50,has made to the ride quality,the comfort of the ride the handling and the damping of a lot of noises. For £2.50 and probably 3hours work(much less if the rears have been off in the last decade) this HAS to be the single best upgrade to a standard Moggie possible. If you can think of any other cheap upgrades that will improve life in a Moggie,let me know.

Well done - now upgrade to SAE 40 oil - it's even better........
And of course - wait for it - a set of Wolseley 1500 9" front brakes transforms the braking.........

At the minute BMC,as my sons are learning to maintain the car as well as drive it,we are trimming the front brakes pretty much weekly and when giving them driving instruction I am insistent on them looking ahead,anticipating and changing down if ANYTHING in their field of vision changes,and I take the car for a little spin myself every now and again,and make sure it locks up in a straight line if I push hard! So,to be honest,as 40mph is the fastest we Trundle,the current braking set up is surprisingly efficient.

One of my front dampers has a weep and when I bought the car I wondered what the awful rattle was when going over slight bumps... the thing was bone dry. I have an oilcan I keep filled with 20/50 engine oil which does the carb and dampers.... it works fine on the dampers.

Where abouts on your Damper is the leak Jowett?

I think it's where the lever arm joins to the shock absorber body because the oil comes down the inner wing and onto the chassis.

If it's only a 'weep' then just be sure to wipe it clean before the next MOT!

Will do BMC, but it passed the last one bone dry and rattling like the Dickens... can't have done it any good at all.

When I bought it I mentioned the suspension rattle to my mechanic who couldn't find anything... I later thought I would check the oil and it swallowed a ton.

I think you should keep your eyes open for a couple of spare ones..........
