Morris 8 gearbox.

Has anyone got an 8 gearbox going spare? IIRC, the mounts for them are further forwards (long story). Also, a rear axle for a series 1 or 2 would be handy. Can exchange for the later Minor bits, if you'd prefer them.

Try ringing Mike the Morris 8 spares man. He keeps a good stock of used parts in and his prices are quite reasonable. His number is 01332 873207.

All sorted! Found one with a seized 1st/reverse but machined it out to fit a bit better.

Is that the 3 speed box?

Yes, a 3-speed Morris 8 Series 1 box. Metric bolts again with Whit heads. There isn't a manual for it so I did it the old fashioned way where you unbolt everything and shake it 'til the bits all fall out. I failed to keep the synchro balls from dropping out (flying out) and I may have stretched that circlip that they always warn you not to damage by tightening the tailshaft nut too much. Bu66er!
Strangely, the tailcone that bolts to the back of the box has no gasket on it but has an oilway through it.

If anyone ever breaks their top cover for their gearbox it is worth knowing that 3 and 4 speed boxes have different dimension lids. Not interchangeable.

Oh yeah, EP90. Is that right?

The Morris 8 Information Manual has an exploaded diagram on P70.

Sadly, though, it doesn't tell you how to make it explode :D . The front and rear bearings have to be pushed out from within but the inside faces are covered by oil slingers. The seized gear also hindered progress. In the end I drove the front bearing out by pressing the rear bearing forwards and using the stack of gears as a long drift. After the front was far enough clear I could get at the circlip to release the tail end and then tug the whole lot out the back with a slide hammer on the tailshaft end bolt. Once far enough back, (Mind the exploding synchro balls!) I could heat the sprocket enough to drive (BFH) the cog off of the shaft once the other gear cluster was slipped off.

It took several goes to get the reassembly done in the correct order. Reverse cluster, layshaft, front end, rear end, front bearing, rear bearing, centre interlock ball, selector shafts, side interlock balls, front lockring, bearing circlips and then end covers.

Glad you got it sorted.
The Morris Eight Manual is ...umm...very scant on detail sometimes and you have to resort to plain commonsense.
I've been helping a pal re-commission a 1936 8 tourer, stuck in a lock up for 6 years untouched.
The " sludge " in the braking system brought a whole new meaning to " contaminated brake fluid ".I think a anchor for stopping would have come in handy !!
Got it through the MOT, straight pass, no advisories last Saturday ...just before the abolition of MOT's for pre 1960 cars.
Heigh ho.

I don't s'pose he has any dampers left over?????

I seem to be short by about 4 of them. :D

I did however strike it lucky with the brakes when I found a set of Wolseley Hornet and Wasp brakes. 9x1.5 and 10x2 inches respectively. Yippee![frame]Image[/frame]

My next task is to affix the handbrake mechanism to the left side of the gearbox. Either braze the mountings to the iron gearbox body or ali weld a bracket to the new gearbox lid plate.
