How long should a head gaskit last?

Post by mbo145 »

My head gaskit is about to go, all the usual signs, oil in the water, water in the oil with mayonaise, miss fire when cold and steam out of the exhaust! I have had 2 in the last 8 years, but I do around 10-12,0000 a year, so each has lasted 30 to 40,000 each. Any advice would be helpful! Phil

Does it always go in the same place?
Examine the surfaces very closely and make sure they are both perfectly flat.
Do you fit the head gasket dry?

Ist time was between 2 and 3, second was to the edge! Not sure if fitted dry, as was done by the garage, should it have a lubricant on it?
Thanks Mark

It should last 'for ever' if done properly. Spotlessly clean surfaces which have been checked for flatness.....and I always use copper face gasket and thin smear of grease on both sides. Torque down to 45 ft lbf in stages following the correct sequence of course. And retorque and reset valve gaps after the first heat cycle........this is MOST important......

I think the answer is "If you want the job done properly, do it yourself."

A head gasket should last indefinitely, I've never fitted one before making sure eveything is spotless is essential, also when actually driving the car make sure you avoid the engine overheating too badly.

You might want to get the head crack tested. A much more common problem than most people realise.
