anyone know anything about petrol/diesel generators?

i want to hire/buy one in order to run a 100amp welder where i cannot get mains power. it would need to be quiet as i don't want to upset any local's.

what sort of power generator would i be looking at in order to sufficiently run the 100amp welder?

thanks

The welder will stipulate what input current it requires - there should be a plate giving wattage and/or amperage (this is not the same as a 100 amp welding current). Once you know the power required, then you can get the correct generator.

As a rough guide, does the welder have a standard 3 pin plug? If yes, then it cannot be more than 13 amp and a 4Kva generator should handle it easily; but do check the plate to be certain. The hire company or sales office would be able to recommend the correct unit once you have the details from the plate on the welder. Whisper quiet generators will cost you more than normal silencers.

Hello Delerie,

generators have problems with welders due to the start up surge and you'll need a larger unit than you first might think.
Some welders are more 'generator friendly' than others but I suggest you take your welder to the hire shop and try it out?
