MAT is correct for a convertible BUT don't rely on that alone. There are many subtle hints that you can look for like A pillar strengthening plates and windscreen top rail but unless you know what to look for and you are determined you want a genuine conv, take someone with you who knows Minors......

It depends what age convertible you are looking for
1952-58 FCA 11/xxxxxx. F = Morris Minor, C = Convertible, 3rd letter = colour
1958-69 MAT5/xxxxxx. M = Morris, A = A Series Engine, T = Tourer (convertible), 5 = Series 5 (1098)
See
http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Car Ident, Chassis no. Ident.
Convertible production finished in 1969. Look for any signs that the chassis plate has been replaced.
MAT is correct for the car but after that the figures may have been misread. I would expect to see MAT3/650xxx - MAT5/1254328. (last convertible)

Also worth checking whether the chassis number on the aluminimum plate matches the number stamped into the bulkhead. On some cars this is quite difficult to locate and, as a result, anyone who trys to pass off a non genuine convertible by simply putting an MAT3, MAT5 or FC plate are sometimes caught out. There may also be some cars where this number appears to be missing but on most it's there if you look hard enough in the right place. I'll send you a pm to tell you how to locate this number. Good luck in your search
