How important is it to fit an inline fuel filter between the petrol pump and the carburettor? I notice that several Minors have them fitted and I wonder what the purpose is and what advantages are gained.

Complete and utter waste of money........ The pump already has a filter in the base - and the SU carb handles anything that gets through that easily. It has no small passages or jets..........

As BMC says an utter waste of money... there's a filter in the fuel pump and one in the carb (on my series 2 anyway). Just make sure you inspect it at the recommended interval. An additional filter is only neccessary if you're using home-brewed fuel.

Never had a problem with the standard filter in the fuel pump (until tomorrow).
The bottom of the float chamber has a well which stops any bits from entering the carb. If you wish you can drain the float chamber and wipe it clean

how can you have a problem 'tomorrow' when it hasn't even arrived yet, unless somehow your Morris is a magic time travelling car????

Because it's tempting fate to say you've never had a problem.

I've NEVER had a problem where I have been left stranded, or even stopped for more than a few minutes. Breakdowns (apart from freak incidents) are completely avoidable by good maintainance. I know every nut and bolt on my car, and have every confidence in it. The fact that they are 40, 50 or 60 years old is irrelevant. Modern cars break down too. Maintainance is the key to reliability, although less mechanically-minded owners may unfortunately find themselves in trouble.
With a Minor there isn't much to break down anyway!

Thanks for the advice. I will save my money to buy something more useful for Tapitha.

Goodo. Inline filters look good under the bonnet at shows, but as you can see they really are quite needless.
