Trackrod end

Frustrating - got suspension bolted up properly on drivers side but when I screwed on the trackrod end nut, the threaded portion started to turn as well - does this mean the trackrod end (which is new) is faulty?

Do you mean trackrod ?? The part that protrudes from the steering rack? Normally it would be held reasonably firmly at the rack end - but if the threads are not completely firm then yes - it can turn. You say they are new - so are they correctly adjusted at the rack end??

Sorry I wasn't clear, connections to the steering rack are absolutely fine, it's the balljoint end where it joins the suspension arm.

Ahh right - that is indeed the track rod end - my confusion. You need to seat the TRE into the taper - perhaps by initially seating it with a gentle 'tap' and then using a plain nut (and a washer) to pull it down tight - then remove them and fit the nyloc nut.

You might be able to grip the shaft above the taper with a narrow pair of pliers. Make sure that there is no oil or grease on the taper or steering rod eye

I LIKE a smear of grease on there - to ensure I can get the thing apart in future!

The grease stops the taper from gripping, a decent ball joint splitter will separate them
