Just because it is a factory rebuilt engine it does not mean that it has not done 100,000 miles since it was rebuilt and may be completely knackered.

Bit of a long shot, but was there ever, by any chance, a BMC "rust and gunge seal" fully rebuilt engine? Only if there was I might have....

Whilst we're on the subject of engine colours, on my 803 the rocker cover is a sort of blue/grey colour, a real 'engineering' looking colour, blue with a lot of grey in it. Anyone know about this? This is a totally original car, and the rest of the engine is red (or was once upon a time).

To go back to the original question a gold seal engine (painted gold) was a full engine factory rebuild and a siver seal engine guess what - painted silver, was a "short engine" ie engine block rebuild.

Thanks for that - the head is an unleaded replacement in BMC green; a colour which I neither like nor want to have on my engine, even if green has the obvious connection with lead-free fuel. I will paint the head and rocker-cover blue then and leave the sump a chipped/extremely worn red.
