Whats it worth??

Post by bugcos »

I have recently inherited a Morris Minor 1000, 1963 2 door. The car was my dads uncles (1st owner), passed to my dad (2nd owner)and he has given it to me. However it is still in his name to stay as a 2 owner car. It has been in a garage since 1991, but I have just had it MOTd (21st December) and I have taxed it, although it is tax exempt. The car is in pretty good condition 60000 miles from new and is a runner, will need a bit of TLC to get it up to show condition. I am looking to sell it, could you give me any idea what its worth, where is the best place to advertise it, or is anyone interested in buying it. (In Stoke on Trent area)

Thanks Martin

Without sounding crass, it is worth what someone will pay for it !
If you watch similar cars on ebay and look through autotrader and other classified listings you will get a rough idea of what current prices are but ultimately you need a buyer with cash who agrees roughly with your valuation

There's a friendly and active club branch in Stoke area - it may be worth contacting them to see if they know of people looking to buy and/or to have a look at the car to assess condition.

Contact them on http://www.potteries.mmoc.org.uk They should be able to give you a good idea of your car's value.

That's not in great shape. The bumper valance and grille can probably be repaired to look new, but those right wings are scrap to anyone but an experienced metalworker. Interior looks nice, except the speedo chrome needs work and the driver's seat is sunken (probably needs new straps). Engine bay looks good, except there's quite a bit of rust on the battery tray (probably repairable without welding, but may have pinholes). I see the fuel pump is new. Pop the bulkhead top seal back on its flange!

In short, since it needs two or more new wings and the driver's seat needs repaired (and we have no idea the condition of the underside or under the wings -- most likely both need work), I'd definitely purchase it because it's repairable, but I wouldn't give you more than £500 for it.

Make sure whoever buys it knows how to do the work -- don't give it to someone who just wants to drive it around, because it could be unsafe.

Yes, from the condition of the wings etc. It can only be assumed that it needs a total restoration - or at least a lot of welding underneath. It's worth a couple of hundred at most, just because it's complete.

Good idea - contact youe local branch, they should help value the car and one of their members may even be interested.

when I used to attend auctions in '78,Stoke PO Minors were notorious for rust!

probably a lot worse underneath!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

He has said it was MOTed in December so in theory it should be fairly good underneath surely

Yes, I might have been a bit harsh, how bad it is and if it's been repaired to a good standard or not will make quite a difference. Given the MOT, I will change my comment from a couple of hundred at most to a couple of hundred at least!

The rotted rear wing is a worry (how did that get an MOT??) - not so much for the wing itself which is a bolt-on replacement, but it may also have rotted the bodyside where it attaches - and that is not such an easy repair........ It should get £500 if put up on ebay.......

Any rot adjacent to the areas on the rear wing will probably be more than 12" from any mounting points, etc., so not an MOT fail.

The rear damper arm attachment point will surely be within 300mm - and any seat belt mounts if present.

The 'interesting' two letter registration may have helped there with the value perhaps...
cheers
