I have just purchased a carpet set from Newtons ie single piece front and single piece rear for my series 2 and now I have to cut various holes , the one I would like advice on is the steering access I would like th remove the steering coluum enough to cut a hole in the carpet then refit the coluum back, rather than a hole and slot, is it a straight forward task of removing the pinch bolt and the bearing retainer fixing on the dash to do this

Yes, pretty sure it is as you describe. The downside might be when you want the carpet out again you will have to remove the column or cut the carpet anyway.

Thanks for that I have already thought about certain downsides ie steering rack lube g/box refil plus the master cylinder but that is what it is by having a single one piece carpet that I have to accept to bring it to its original condition

'Original' carpets had a hole and a slit as far as I know - you would be well advised to do the same......... Fix the slit back together again with velcro if you want to make it invisible. You may have to do the same for the pedals......

Thanks for the advice I have managed to get 2 off large pieces of cardboard so I will make up templates as the carpet and trim these to fit then transfer sizes to the carpet

I still have the original carpets from my Series II. They are a little faded and soiled from 56 years of use and so I decided to fit a new set from Newton Commercial. Unfortunately the new carpets have significant variation from the original. I spoke to NC first and got a sample so I was prepared for the colour being different and the cheaper type fabric. However, I was very disappointed at the differences in shape and trimming compared to the original, even an incorrect heel mat. Should have been much better for the price in my opinion.

Thanks Neil before I bought the carpets I had a long telecom with Newtons and was assured that all the relavent holes were already in the carpet set I was buying so I was surprised that they were not .I have since had another long telecom with the owner of Newtons as it is now down to me to cut the expensive carpets , one reason they gave for not producing any holes was the car might have been modified which mine has not I even suggested that they could supply a stencil in the set which would show what/where to cut the holes . I only hope that when I trial fit the cardboard template it fits the wheel arch profile I do not mind a certain amount of trimming but if the profile is wrong by being too short in this area they will be returned to Newtons. Are your original carpets out of the car and if so perhaps you could measure up the hole diameters and slot sizes for the pedals

Interesting. When I called Newton Commercial I told them that I had the original uncut carpets complete with all fasteners and trim and asked them if they would like them as templates. They told me that they already had the correct templates. If that is the case, they are not strict in following them!

I will try and get some measurements and pictures later today.

My plan is to try and find the correct colour carpet and then make my own the same as the originals.

Neil I have moved on slightly with this issue after several further phone calls with Newtons in particular a person named John in the fitting department tel 01728 833763 who is now very keen to get hold of your carpet set and be in a position to modify their data to enable all the holes /slots to be produced or at least the positions of them marked on the carpet sets they will produce they have even offered to pick up my carpet set and modify /make again to suit the revised dimensions if you can agree to this can you please make contact with John at Newtons on the number above
