Starter Motor Question

Just before I put my car away a good few months ago I was having some intermittent problems with starting it. It's always taken a bit of "churning" before it fires but sometimes I would pull the starter and nothing would happen, just a short "clunk" then nothing - the same as if the battery was flat. Then after trying a few times it would be fine again.
Does this sound like the starter motor is on it's way out or perhaps a good clean would fix it? Are there any specific things I can do to give the starter motor a bit of a service?
