Hi i have a 1957 four door morris minor 1000 with 948cc. The speedo doesnt return to zero unless left for a long time or glass is tapped. Also the speed reading whilst driving is very optomistic i have used my mobile via gps as a speedo and the car will read 60mph when gps says im doing 45mph and the trip meter does not move but im not too worried about that. any help will be gratefully received.

The mileometer must be jammed - probably beyond economic repair, and the speed needle mech will be contaminated with oil. Frankly - the best option is to get another speedo. Not the tpm number on the dial so you get another with the same number to keep the speed/miles readings reasonable.

Hi was thinking of maybe taking it apart and cleaning it with a decrease to see if it helps

To get it overhauled would cost circa £90 from Speedy Cables. Not cheap but it will work fine but takes from 4-6 weeks to get done.

If it's contaminated with oil, then you need a new speedo cable as well probably or it will happen again. (there is a thread on cleaning a speedo head on site)

Intereurope Repair Manual says that on MM's the later models had a modified drive assembly using a modified drive bearing (31449) and a modified pinion (31439) because of speedo head oil contamination on early models

A Gaco oil seal (162285) was also used

You can see if it's modified as it has a second 'hexagon' which contained the oil seal

Once the mileage readout sticks - gears become damaged/worn = expensive repair. You can usually pick up working speedos for £5/10.

The speedo drive modifications were to the early Series MM gearboxes, nothing to do with M1000.
If the mileometer is not working it could be due to a broken drive gear. The workings of the speedometer are very fragile and I would not recommend attempting to clean it unless you have a very steady hand.
You need a replacement speedo with a TPM of 1504.

How would i know it has a tpm of 1504. Have seen a few on ebay which are mostly black. mine is more a Magnolia beige in colouring ign oil ind and beam lights.

The TPM is printed on the face of the speedometer after the Serial Number
Black speedos are generally for 1098 Minors with a TPM of 1408, except 1098 LGVs which have a tpm of 1504.

But my minor is a 948cc 4 door saloon not an lgv has it got the wrong clock then

As suggested earlier - what is the tpm of your speedo??? Then we can look for a replacement......

The tpm of my speedo is 1500

1500 exactly - or 1504 ? And is it 'bronze' faced ?? Also - what's the top speed shown?
This for example is NOT a Minor speedo, it is a Mini speedo with tpm 1376.... it's also far too expensive...

Chassis number has basically nothing to do with it......you just need a bronze face speedo with 80 mph top speed and 1500 or 1504 tpm...... assuming you still have a 4.55 final drive in the axle. And don't pay more than £10 for it!!!

As far as i know it still has the original final drive. any ideas where i would get one from
