Starting when cold

Post by Gareth Rogers »

Have just recently changed points , condenser and plugs as part of a normal service. I also adjusted the mixture as car had tendency to stall when hot with clutch depressed. Left car for 2 days and then would not start. Took off dizzy cap and wiped inside ( could not see any damp) it started immediately. ran fine for 2 weeks. Left car for 2 days and same thing happened, wiped cap, would not start . My missus had given the car full choke to start so I pushed choke in and she started immediately. Points gap seems ok, car runs fine it seems if she is used each day! Annoying thing is that the car was fine before I started 'fiddling ' as my wife puts it ! Where do i go to find the cause of the problem? ps car is outside all the time and was restored by Manchester Minors last year.

You probably created the problem by unnecessarily adjusting the mixture. You would probably have prevented the stalling by increasing the tickover speed.

It does sound like a mixture problem. If you started it without the choke after your wife had failed using the choke it sounds like it is too rich.
