Hi There Just wondering when to change my engine oil and filter.
As said in the haines manual im changing my oil every 3ooo miles or six months. Is this correct?
And i plan to put a spin on oil filter at my next oil change. Can this mean more miles before the next oil change..

I'm with BMC on this one. Engine oil is cheap. Engine wear is expensive.

I'm with faversham999, engine oil has moved on a lot in 50 years.

Aye - but the clag an A series dumps into the oil hasn't changed....

The way the oil deals with it has changed though.
Once the sump and rocker cover have been off and cleaned there seems to be very little clag production.
I guess modern petrol isn't exactly the same as the old stuff either.

I change my oil every 3000miles you can change every 5000 with the spin filter but 20/50 is cheap . My Skoda Octavia is changed every 30,000miles. Its done over 430000 miles so newer oils are better

And cheaper than an engine or rebuild . Im sticking to 3000 miles as well. Lets face it its not a costly exercise .
Especially. if you do it yourself.

Even if you are using long life oil, it must be changed at 20,000 miles or 2 years at the most.

Yes - easier to clean off the drive!

You may find that 3000 miles is too long an interval (!) Look at the colour of your oil and listen to the engine noise. You should know when it starts sounding rough it's time for an oil change. Replace the disposable filter aswell. Whilst you're at it check the carb oil level (something overlooked by many owners), clean and gap the points, clean and gap spark plugs, lubricate distributor, check HT lead condition etc. Grease trunnions every 500 miles (6 nipples in total). Fit a magnetic sump-plug if you haven't already got one.

Oh, and replace that blasted oil filler cap with the inbuilt filter too! Ha, now I have a series II with its original engine I don't have to worry about that....

depends what crankcase breathing system you have

803 engine breathing: the rocker cover to air filter sucker pipe and a tappet chest (I think, it comes out of the block anyway) breather pipe, which discharges below the engine.

Used some cheap 20/50 on the old 1300 Allegro as a 'top up' oil. This made it sound rough after I think not even 1,000 miles. Never have I bought such bilge water again... having said that 'cheap' Halford's 'Classic' 20/50 greenbase oil worked like a dream and was good for at least 2,500 miles.

I agree BMC with your comment that the 'clag an A Series dumps in the oil hasn't changed'. The oil turns dark very quickly. It's one of the things which astounded me when I switched from modern to vintage cars.
